During this session, presenters will explore tools and resources to help your district address staff and family well-being and community strength. The session will include small group conversations about ways educators have responded during this crisis and how you can be part of an ongoing discussion about best practices in our state.

Leading this webinar are Dr. Kirsten Kainz, research professor in the UNC School of Social Work, fellow at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, and former Durham Public Schools Board of Education member; Dr. Sarah Rabiner Eisensmith, educator, therapist, and recent graduate of the UNC School of Social Work; and Dr. Travis Albritton, assistant dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the UNC School of Social Work.

Aspiring Superintendents Program and Superintendent/Board Relationships

Jack Hoke, executive director of the North Carolina School Superintendents’ Association (NCSSA), will provide information on the NCSSA Aspiring Superintendents Program, which has 14 participants who have become superintendents. He will have a panel discussion with Tanya Turner, superintendent of Perquimans County Schools, Jeff Wallace, superintendent of Davie County Schools, and Dr. Otis Smallwood, superintendent of Bertie County Schools, regarding the program and the importance of positive superintendent/board relationships. Also, the Next Generation Superintendent Development Program and the NC District Leader Executive Coaching Program will be discussed.

Reopening NC Public Schools

Representatives from the NC Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and the NC Office of the Governor will share information regarding the state’s guidelines for reopening NC public schools. Joining us will be Geoff Coltrane, the governor’s senior education advisor, Dr. Beverly Emory, NCDPI deputy superintendent of district support, and Dr. David Stegall, NCDPI deputy superintendent of innovation.

The guidelines are expected to be released soon. If you have a question you would like to ask the panel, please use this form. Questions must be submitted by the end of the day on Friday, June 19.

Preparing Your Students for the Future with STEM

In this session, participants will explore why they should be providing STEM teaching and learning to their students, how it combines content and skills with real-world problems, and how they can begin the transformation in their district.

Dr. Cindy Moss is a graduate of Rowan-Salisbury Schools and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Morehead Scholar. She worked as a classroom teacher in high schools in Syracuse, New York, and with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). After teaching for 20 years, she became the PreK-12 director of STEM for CMS, holding that position for 10 years.

Dr. Moss holds a bachelor’s degree in zoology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master’s degree in science from Syracuse University. She also holds a doctorate in science curriculum and instruction from the Curtin Institute of Technology in Perth, Western Australia. Some of her many honors include the Milken National Educator Award and the NC Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center’s STEM Administrator Award. Currently, Dr. Moss is vice president of global STEM for Discovery Education and travels the world meeting with businesses, nonprofits, governments, and school districts to help them create a vision to prepare their students for the future.

Conducting School Board Meetings During a Pandemic: Remote Participation at Board Meetings and Other Legal Issues
