Guilford Science Teachers Win $11,000 in Grants

Three Guilford County teachers have more funding for lab equipment and to support a healthy living program after winning grants from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.

The North Carolina-based nonprofit organization awarded grants totaling about $11,000 to Aebeyo Abraha at Smith High, Katheryn Cooper of The Early College at Guilford, and Claudia Walker of Murphey Traditional Academy.

Abraha, a chemistry teacher and science department chairman at Smith High, will receive $4,492 for new lab equipment, sensors and training for teachers on how to use the new materials, according to a news release from Guilford County Schools. With the project, students will collect data and form scientific conclusions based on their experiments.

Cooper, who teaches Advanced Placement Environmental Science at The Early College at Guilford, will receive $2,981 to buy electronic lab equipment and sensors to examine soil, water and air quality. Her students will conduct an experiment to see the impact of human activities on an enclosed ecosystem, according to the news release.

Walker, a fifth-grade teacher at Murphey Traditional Academy, will receive $3,400 to support a healthy living program by buying classroom equipment, materials and for training, according to the news release. Fourth- and fifth-graders will research human body functions, as well as health and wellness. The project includes many other activities, including having the older students teach younger ones about using the school’s fitness equipment.
